A Mac user since 2010 and few complaints. Enjoy much fewer problems and crashes. Yet, I do not like to hear / see comments that Mac never or rarely get infected. Sometimes what gets infected is your browser, such as Safari or Firefox, by malicious codes attached to keywords found upon websites, even your primary search window / page. MalwareBytes has found several items to be flushed down the toilet. This happens only about once or twice a month. But what got me is that only after it updated itself, did it find one malicious file from Dec. 2015 and that was in November of 2016. Might want to try and be a little more on the ball / quicker. Firewall was always on and still things get filtered through, by sneaky stealth. Everyone needs some kind of malware detection app.

Unfortunately, it's very easy to get infected by different viruses every day. Even iPhones can be easily infected due to the weakness of Safari browser. Always keep your antivirus app up-to-date! And, yes, I will suggest Avast as the best free option.

I've been using the free version of Avast for a couple years on my Windows laptop with no problems. Can anyone tell me if ClamXav really works better with Mac OS X?

Yes but you don't need to use one for a Mac system as they rarely get infected.
